Below are some of the most commonly asked questions. If you have any specific questions that are not answered here, contact us and we will be happy to answer them.
How does One with the Water teach a child to swim in less than 4 hours?
1. We are expert teachers and swimmers. Most of the One with the Water instructors have over 20 years of experience teaching swimming lessons. We teach the best and most efficient approach to the most pertinent skills of swimming: Breathing, Balance, Kicking, and Pulling. We break it down to simple achievable goals to help everyone succeed.
2. We get to know you as a person – your fears and your strengths. Instead of wasting time on building your weaknesses, we work with your strengths to achieve your goals quickly.
3. We make you feel comfortable and secure. We are certified and accredited coaches with 10,000 plus hours of experience. You are safe with us.
What does my child need for the lessons?
A swimsuit and a towel is all that is needed. No flotation devices, flippers, masks, goggles, etc.
Should I feed my child before the lesson?
Please, no food or drink at least ½ hour before a lesson. If your child does need to eat, it is best to eat without liquids, that way the food and nutrients are quickly absorbed.
Will my child learn the basics of treading water and be able to do so even if just for a few seconds up to a minute?
Most parents want their children to be “water safe,” meaning that if your child was to fall into the water, the child would either be able to get themselves out of the water on their own accord or call for help while floating and treading water. Our number one priority for all lessons is to teach all children and adults how to save themselves before we proceed to teaching stroke techniques.
Will my child really learn to swim in 8 lessons?
Yes! Most beginners will be swimming in 3 or 4 days, some even in the first or second lesson. The remaining sessions will be used to build confidence and develop skills.
Are the pools heated?
Yes. All pools are heated to 82 (for lap swimming) to 92 degrees.
What days of the week can I schedule the lessons?
We teach every day of the week, depending on our pool permits and hours. We teach at several local pools all year long. We schedule the lessons around your calendar to meet your needs and reach your swimming goals.
Where are the lessons?
Most lessons are held at the Culver City Plunge or the Pacific Palisades High School – Maggie Gilbert Aquatics Center. Lessons can also be held at private homes that we have pre-arranged in advance, or at your house.
At what age do you start?
Parent & Me classes start at 6 months old, and most of our semi-private lessons are designed for children aged 18-months and up.
Will my baby be going under water?
As part of the course in the Parent & Me Swimming Classes, your child will go under water. If your child is coughing after they go under, we highly recommend no more than 3 tries during the lesson that they are under water. We do not physically force any child to put their heads underwater.
Can my baby really learn to turn over on their back?
As part of the course in the Parent & Me Swimming Classes, and all of the swimming courses, your child will learn to turn over onto their back. As stated above, it is best to try this no more than 3 times during each lesson.
Do parents get in the pool?
For Parent and Me Swimming Classes, at least one person will get in the water with the child. For kids at least 18 months or older, we try to teach them without the parent, or at least until the child becomes comfortable with us. During the later part of the course we may invite you into the pool to swim with your child, to teach you how to continue helping them learn to swim.
Do you teach in the rain?
Yes, lessons are held daily regardless of the weather, unless there is thunder and lightning. You or your child will be getting wet anyway. And it’s really fun swimming in the rain!
When and how do I pay?
Payment is due in full by the first day of class. Space is only reserved for those that have paid in advance unless you make prior payment arrangements. You may pay by cash, check or credit card. There are no refunds for cancellations or missed lessons.
What is the United States Swim School Association?
One with the Water would be a member of the United States Swim School Association (USSSA) but they do not open their membership to Non-Profit swim schools. At One with the Water, parents and students should know that you will be provided a great swim school with certified and experienced instructors. You can rest assured that you have chosen the best swim school in the nation and that the funds are used for our Foundation and Scholarship Program.
