about Swimming Lessons for Kids and Adults

Commonly Asked Questions about swimming lessons for kids and adults.

If you have any specific questions not shown here, about our swim lessons for kids or swim lessons for adults, please Contact Us and we will be happy to answer them.

What does my child need for the lessons?
A swimsuit and a towel is all that is needed. No flotation devices, flippers, masks, goggles, etc. Also, no food or drink at least 1.5 hours before a lesson.

Will my child really learn to swim in 8 lessons?
Yes! Most beginners will be swimming in 3 or 4 days, some even in the first or second lesson. The remaining sessions will be used to build confidence and develop skills.

Are the pools heated?
Yes. All pools are heated to 84 to 92 degrees.

Do you teach on the weekends?
Most courses for children run on weekdays for a period of 4 or 9 consecutive weekdays. We teach on weekends at several local pools all year long.

Where are the lessons?
Most lessons are held at the Culver City Plunge or the Pacific Palisades High School - Maggie Giblert Aquatics Center. Lessons can also be held at private homes that we have pre-arranged in advance. Please see our Swimming Lessons Calendar for lessons held at public pools.

At what age do you start?
Parent & Me classes start at 6 months old, and most of our programs are designed for children aged 18-months and up.

Will my baby be going under water?
As part of the course in the Parent & Me Swimming Classes, your child will go under water. If your child is coughing after they go under, we highly recommend no more than 3 tries during the lesson that they are under water.

Can my baby really learn to turn over on their back?
As part of the course in the Parent & Me Swimming Classes, your child will learn to turn over onto their back. As stated above, it is best to try this only 3 times during the lesson.

Do parents get in the pool?
For Parent and Me Swimming Classes, at least one person will get in the water with the child. For kids at least 18 months or older, we try to teach them without the parent, or at least until the child becomes comfortable with us. During the later part of the course we may invite you into the pool to swim with your child, to teach you how to continue helping them learn to swim.

Do you teach in the rain?
Yes, lessons are held daily regardless of the weather, unless there is thunder and lightning. You or your child will be getting wet anyway. And it's really fun swimming in the rain!

When and how do I pay?
Payment is due in full by the first day of class. Space is only reserved for those that have paid in advance unless you make prior payment arrangements. You may pay by cash, check or credit card. There are no refunds for cancellations within 24 hours.

Safe Swimming Secrets

  • Only use U.S. Coast Guard approved flotation devices and life jackets; Floaties and water wings give children and parents a false sense of security.
  • Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before swimming so it does not wash off immediately.
  • In most cases, it is not chlorine that burns the eyes, but rather sunscreen placed too close to the eyes that causes discomfort.
  • Children should always be supervised when in and around water.
  • Always walk when near a pool, water makes surfaces slippery.
  • Always wear appropriate swim attire.
  • Save the alcoholic beverages for later, swim sober.
  • Use plastic bottles or other non-breakable containers for food and beverages when around a pool.
  • Use a swim diaper for kids that require diapers.

Help A Child Learn To Swim

Help a child on the autism spectrum learn to swim.
One with the Water™ is committed to providing swim lessons to children and adults regardless of ability or income.

In the U.S., drowning is the second leading cause of death (after motor vehicle crashes) in children twelve and younger in spite of being highly preventable. Our goal is to teach as many children as possible to swim and lower that statistic. Join us in reaching that goal by becoming a monthly sponsor!
